English Grandfather / Tall Case Clock Playing on Nest of
Bells and Gongs
Call 970-224-2120 or Email Robin@rclocks.com For Pricing This gorgeous clock is a three train English Tall case movement playing Whittington chimes on a nest of eight bells or Westminster chimes on a set of 4 massive gongs, on the quarter hours. Striking the count of the hour on a very large gong. With extremely thick brass plates and very hard steel pivots, this movement is designed to work for centuries, literally. Though this movement is not marked with a manufacturers name it appears to be consistent with Elliott's of London clock movements of circa 1890. The movement is massive and has many features, including chime shut off and melody selection. The two subsidiary dials above the chapter ring of the dial are for those features. The escapement has a beat adjustment incorporating two thumb screws within the suspension bridge to adjust the ticking (the beat) for whatever angle the clock rests. The dial is incredibly elaborate with a finely engraved brass section within the chapter ring and filigreed thick brass spandrels outside the chapter ring, with chasing. The chapter ring itself is silvered with hand cut thick brass numerals applied to it and fancy decoration. There is a seconds bit just below the 12 with it's associated ring broken into 10 second segments. The entire dial assembly has been recently restored by "The Dial House" in Georgia and has their sticker on the back of the dial facing the movement. The mahogany case is finely made and in excellent original condition. It is 94 inches to the tip of the center finial, 22 inches wide at it's widest point which is the bonnet and 14 1/4 inches deep at the base. The bonnet is removable by sliding forward and allows easy access to the movement for maintenance or observation. The glass in both the bonnet and waist door is very thick with hand beveling. The bonnet glass being arched for viewing the subsidiary dials. The bonnet also has cast brass decorations on the sides with dark green silk cloth on their interior, these are to allow sound to come out into the room and keep dust away from the interior. There are two locks, one on the waist door and one on the bonnet door, both having their original keys which are cut individually for each lock. In both the front corners of the waist and the bonnet are free standing fluted mahogany columns. More photos are available upon request. |

Swedish Mora Clock SOLD This rare Swedish Mora floor clock has a interesting history. You can see the date of 1842 on the case, but this clock was made sometime around 1790. Look closely at the dial and you will see two names and the word Boda. Boda is the region this clock was made, although we know these style of clocks as Mora clocks due to Mora being the primary clock making region in Sweden. The clock itself was made in the late 1700's, notice that it only has one hand. The case is handmade and held together with wood pegs. The paintings are made from natural dyes and egg yolks. This clock runs 8-days on a winding of its single weight. Making this a timekeeper only, no striking. Add this to your home and watch the eyes as your guests come across it. |
